For me, the purpose of art is an understanding of how to put together the concepts of experience and construction of ideas, while using various materials to create in visual terms these are concepts which stimulate ones mental and physical activity, inventiveness, and expression of inner forces and energy. As with time (experiences) and as the culture of art (materials and technology) changes, my teaching techniques and styles are influenced, thus my teaching methods change. Courses that I've taught thus far have been engaged in developing basics and reinforcing a strong foundation; I believe that students develop with practice, yet I continue to reinforce foundations of art elements and principles of organization in all my classes. I design most classes that continue to use traditional methods (perspective, light and values for example) while incorporating interdisciplinary concepts and tools (computer generated and cultural iconography). I continue to keep myself updated with publications and the latest versions of software and tools. To some degree, this teaching philosophy is geared toward the foundations level, but is also applied to intermediate and advanced courses in fine arts and visual communications as well as in the histories of art.
In teaching fine arts, computer graphics, or visual communications, I want students to understand and utilize the tools of art making by applying the elements and principles of organization to the work. I encourage students to develop and experience a personal connection to life and a greater understanding of themselves through the process of making art. I enjoy teaching and working with students. My goal is to build a balanced and creative environment for students to learn concepts in the visual arts. I believe that it is also important to demonstrate my own ability as an artist to the students. One way I do this is to share my work and experiences as an artist through lecture and presentation. Because of my diverse background and experience in different areas in the visual arts, I possess knowledge and skills that will benefit students and help direct them while they pursue their degrees in their chosen areas. I feel it is important to continue to be curious in all subjects and develop a sense of adventure and not limit ones experiences of travel, technology, reading, and participating in activity of thought.
